TAIEX is Taiwan's broad stock-market benchmark, tracking shares listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. Constituents are weighted by market capitalization, so larger companies have a greater influence. It covers businesses across industries including semiconductors, electronics, manufacturing and finance, reflecting both Taiwan's economy and demand from overseas markets.

History and development

TAIEX began in 1967, with the 1966 average set to 100. It measures the Taiwan Stock Exchange market on a capitalization-weighted basis. Its composition has developed with Taiwan's listed companies and industries; it is a broad-market benchmark, not a semiconductor-only sector index.

Comparing charts on this board

Compare TAIEX with the US semiconductor index and KOSPI to follow the chip cycle across regions. Taiwan's session after a US semiconductor move helps show how a theme carries into the next market.

Add TSMC's US depositary shares to move between the broad market and a major business. Separate session direction from next-business-day reactions because Taiwan and the US trade at different times and in different currencies.
