1489 is a Tokyo-listed ETF tracking the Nikkei 225 High Dividend Yield Stock 50 Index, including dividends. It selects approximately 50 high-dividend companies from the Nikkei 225 universe and weights them with dividend yield and liquidity considerations. Shares trade in yen, with four distributions a year. It emphasizes Japanese large-cap dividend stocks rather than replicating the whole market by capitalization.
History and development
1489 was established on February 10, 2017 and listed in Tokyo on February 13. It packages an index selecting 50 high-dividend companies from the Nikkei 225 universe into an exchange-traded fund. The design makes a dividend-oriented investment across Japanese companies accessible in one holding.
A 30-for-1 unit split on January 19, 2024 reduced the size of each tradable unit without creating extra asset value. Its four annual accounting dates are different from actual distribution payment dates; income-calendar comparisons require the issuer’s payable dates.

Comparing charts on this board
Compare 1489 with TOPIX for the relative strength of Japanese high-dividend large caps versus the broad market. Sector leadership, including financials and trading companies, helps explain divergences. Selecting high-dividend companies is a deliberate exposure tilt, not equal representation of every stock.
SPY and VXUS provide U.S. and ex-U.S. comparisons. Tokyo and U.S. sessions differ, and 1489 trades in yen while those ETFs trade in dollars. Add USD/JPY to separate currency effects; check distribution payment dates separately from intraday price charts.
