XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger. It can be used for transfers and cross-currency settlement; a small amount is destroyed as a transaction fee. XRP/JPY quotes one XRP in yen; both crypto demand and exchange-rate changes affect its yen value.

History and development

David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto began developing the XRP Ledger in 2011, and the network launched in 2012. They sought efficient transfers without Bitcoin-style competitive mining. XRP emerged as the ledger’s native digital asset.

Businesses and developers subsequently expanded payment and cross-currency uses. XRP, the XRP Ledger and associated companies are distinct: XRP is not corporate equity. Keeping these separate clarifies the history of the network and asset versus the histories of businesses using them.

Comparing charts on this board

Compare XRP/JPY with XRP/USD and USD/JPY to separate crypto movement from currency effects. Yen depreciation can lift yen-denominated value even when the dollar price is flat. Yen appreciation can reduce a dollar-price gain when expressed in yen.

Add BTC / USD to distinguish XRP-specific movement from broad crypto activity. First compare dollar-denominated returns and turning points, then examine the yen chart. Align quote timestamps so differences in update intervals are not mistaken for currency effects.
