XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger. It can be used for transfers and cross-currency settlement; a small amount is destroyed as a transaction fee. XRP/USD quotes it in US dollars.

History and development

David Schwartz, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto began developing the XRP Ledger in 2011, and the network launched in 2012. They sought efficient transfers without Bitcoin-style competitive mining. XRP emerged as the ledger’s native digital asset.

Businesses and developers subsequently expanded payment and cross-currency uses. XRP, the XRP Ledger and associated companies are distinct: XRP is not corporate equity. Keeping these separate clarifies the history of the network and asset versus the histories of businesses using them.
