Nikkei Closes Above 70,000 as Bond Auction Relief Supports Afternoon Gains

October 6, 2026 charts: Nikkei 225, TOPIX, Japan 10-year government bond yield and USD/JPY.

A close above 70,000, with broader participation

Japanese stocks advanced on October 6. The Nikkei 225 closed at 70,683.98, up 737.12 points or 1.05%, while TOPIX gained 38.34 points to 4,183.56, a rise of 0.92%. These final levels come from IwaiCosmo Securities’ closing report. Holding above 70,000 after the previous session’s sharp rally suggests that fresh buying absorbed profit-taking around the milestone. TOPIX’s similar percentage gain also indicates that support extended beyond the stocks with the largest influence on the Nikkei.

The positive backdrop combined overnight strength in U.S. technology shares with earnings expectations for Japanese AI and semiconductor companies. Against that stood concerns about a rapid advance and rising long-term yields, which weigh on growth-stock valuations. Fisco’s opening report put the Nikkei’s opening level at 69,954.61, only slightly higher. Tokyo began with buying interest meeting profit-taking rather than immediately breaking higher on the overseas rally.

An interrupted morning advance becomes a steadier afternoon climb

The morning chart shows the Nikkei moving back and forth after the open rather than extending its initial rise uninterrupted. TOPIX also tested a higher level before retreating, showing that buying lost momentum along the way. The morning closes were 70,081.53 for the Nikkei and 4,163.61 for TOPIX. Positive earnings expectations provided a reason to buy, but the market needed time to absorb yield concerns and selling after the previous day’s rally. The equity time axis includes Tokyo’s lunch break; the change between the morning close and afternoon open should not be treated as an instantaneous jump during continuous trading.

Fisco’s afternoon opening report placed the Nikkei at 70,230.80, above its morning close. Rising domestic yields were still a concern at that point. The closing report subsequently described reassurance after the 10-year government bond auction passed without disruption. Easing fears of further yield increases made earnings-led equity buying easier to sustain. That provides the strongest explanation for the afternoon’s persistent advance. The auction is treated as a supporting catalyst, without claiming that its announcement coincided with a particular point on the chart.

The Nikkei chart steps higher during the afternoon and remains elevated from roughly 2 p.m. onward. TOPIX also trends higher, preserving its gain despite a modest late pullback. From the morning close to the final close, the Nikkei added 602.45 points and TOPIX gained 19.95 points. The Nikkei strengthened in the afternoon and the broader index followed. Compared with the morning’s failed attempt to extend its rise, pullbacks after the afternoon recovery were shallower and buying persisted. Separating the morning’s oscillations from the afternoon’s accumulation reveals an improvement that the closing percentages alone do not capture.

Read yields and currencies on their own time axes

The Nikkei rose roughly 0.9% from its morning close, but the chart mainly shows an advance developing over time rather than a single vertical move attributable to one statement. The confirmed auction relief and AI-related buying fit a shift back toward growth expectations as yield concerns eased. The Japan 10-year yield chart contains gaps in its daily history. Those gaps are not treated as abrupt market moves, and no missing timestamps are filled in.

The 24-hour USD/JPY chart shows a dip followed by a recovery toward its right-hand side. Its window differs from the equity charts’ 9 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Tokyo session, so the currency trough cannot be assigned an exact Tokyo trading time from this image. The afternoon opening report placed USD/JPY around 157.90–158, roughly unchanged from around 9 a.m. That makes relief over yields and domestic corporate growth expectations a stronger explanation for the afternoon equity rally than a large depreciation of the yen. The currency recovery can be read as additional support for exporters, while avoiding an explanation of the entire stock-market advance through exchange rates.
